Armor of the 4th Legion

This is my current fleet of tracked vehicles for my Iron Warriors. Since I painted the Vindicator some months after the Rhino, I changed the way of doing the metallics. The Vindicator should also be one of my first projects where I used my airbrush.

For the Rhino I did my best free handing the allegiance to the IV legion, but for the large hazard stripes fell back to masking tape. I had some fun putting in the daemonic visage on the side of the Rhino. It originated from the Chaos Rhino upgrade sprue. Not sure what I did, either I put some greenstuff on the door and pushed the bit in, or I casted it and then integrated it into the door.

The paint job of the Rhino was done similar to the one described here.

I wanted this tank to look used, fitting for some thousand years of action, so I added lots of battle damage after assembly. Mostly with either a hobby knife or various drill bits.

For the paint job, I started by priming the Vindicator black, and after it was dry, sprayed it with Leadbelcher using my airbrush. Then, I tried out a bit of preshading by adding some black and brown colors into my airbrush and applied the mixture in areas that should look a bit darker. For the rust and Mars like dirt effects, I dry brushed Skrag Brown from below. Randomly a brighter metal tone (Stormhost Silver) was applied to further add battle damage but also in other parts as a highlight color for the metallics.

Retrospective

Both vehicles could really have used some oil washes.

Camera Settings

For all pictures I used my Nikon D3100 with a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 lens. I shot at 50 mm with f/6,3, 1/30 and ISO 200. Regarding the lighting of the pictures, I used two desk lamps and black cardboard as the background. Next time I will probably go up a bit in aperture to make the depth of field effect less shallow.
